Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated August 7, 1963 partially reads, "Alligators don't make very good pets. That's what Ernie R. Brown, senior kennelman at the Valley Animal Shelter in North Hollywood, said Tuesday as he stood surveying the shelter's newest resident - a foot-and-a-half long alligator. Why don't alligators make good pets? 'Because they bite,' said brown, looking as if the question shouldn't have been asked. Brown said the alligator was found Monday night crawling along the sidewalk near 11213 Blythe St. about 8:30 p.m. Off he went to the shelter to await rescue by his owner, But so far, no one has claimed him. Gabriel M. Castro, a shelter kennelman, picked up the alligator by the nape of the neck and the alligator passively clawed air."
