Description
View from top of City Hall, looking northwest toward the County Hall of Justice and the area beyond; the 101 Hollywood Freeway can be seen behind the buildings. The stately 14-story Beaux Arts structure was designed by Allied Architects in 1922, and housed the Los Angeles County courts, Los Angeles County Coroner, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office, Los Angeles County District Attorney, and was for many years the primary Los Angeles County jail, until it was damaged by the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, at which point it was completely abandoned. The top five floors formerly served as the county's main jail facility to famous, or infamous, residents such as: Robert Mitchum (actor, served a 50-day sentence on marijuana charges); Charles Manson (cult-leader serving life imprisonment on seven counts of murder); gangster "Bugsy" Siegal (served time for murder but was later acquitted of all charges); and Sirhan Sirhan (serving life imprisonment for the murder of Robert F. Kennedy) among others. Not only did the top floors contain history, the basement did as well; it housed the City Morgue and several pathology labs. Autopsies performed here included that of Marilyn Monroe, and ironically enough, Robert F. Kennedy - whose killer was, or would be, housed a few floors above.
