Description
Plates in: Mare Island photograph album, pg. [6]. Shows ship in Napa River, Vallejo in background. 1991-1150. Screw sloop, laid down in 1861 in Philadelphia, PA by Merrick and Sons; commissioned in 1861. Served during Civil War; sailed for San Francisco in 1873 where surveyed the sea floor off the northwest coast to determine a suitable route for a submarine cable. Returned several times during 1870s to Mare Island; finally struck from Navy list in 1883.
