Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Annie J. Budak was born in Turkey on September 1, 1945 and came to Southern California in 1980 with her husband. In 1982, her parents and two brothers immigrated from Istanbul to be with her. Annie lived in Glendale and moved to Northridge in 1987. She lived through the 1994 quake, but her house was destroyed, and she moved back to Glendale. Sixteen year-old Annie Budak (back row, second from left) poses with her family and friends on the waterfront of the Bosphorus Strait in the Bebek neighborhood of Istanbul before a performance at a local night club on December 22, 1971. Pictured from left to right, in the back row, are Vilma Börek (Annie's high school friend who became a doctor in Paris), Annie Budak, Vilma's mother, Silva, and Annie's mother, Mari Gulbeyan. In the front are Annie's fifteen year-old brother, Aramis Gulbeyan and father, Nubar Gulbeyan.
