Description
The Regency TR-1 was the first commercially-sold transistor radio, and was the first widely sold transistorized product. It was designed and manufactured in the United States for just one year starting in November, 1954. The first portable radios used vacuum tubes, but their batteries were heavy and ran out quickly. The transistor was a revolutionary device that replaced the triode. Most people in the 1960s came to associate the term "transistor" with the portable radio.
