During Peter Drucker’s lecture regarding managing the non-profit organization he begins by going over the course syllabus, the requirements for the course and gives some general comments concerning the final paper. He then launches into a discussion on the difficulty in defining what a non-profit institution is and how this difficulty is due to the emergence of the social sector. Drucker goes on to share how he became involved in non-profit organizations, beginning with hospitals. He also gives his thoughts on business tycoons such as J.P. Morgan, Andrew Mellon, and Bill Gates. He goes on to discuss the Salvation Army, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the history of charitable giving. He explains that the American Heart Association has been such a success because it focuses on its results.
