Description
Photograph of a close-up of street sign for Tigertail Road, which runs north-south in the Brentwood Hills between Canna Road and Kenter Avenue. "A Los Angeles street by any other name might not be so hard to find. -- Just ask a letter carrier where Walnut is. -- There are 36 Walnuts in various combinations with street, avenue, boulevard, lane, drive, way, place, road, circle and path according to Edmund G. Passler, head of the city's street name division. His duty is to prevent any more duplications creeping in when new subdivisions are filed. -- There are also 36 Washingtons, 28 Prospects, 27 Maples, 17 Ramonas and 26 Olives to say nothing of the various Oranges such as Orange circle, Orange cove, Orangecrest, Orangedale, Orangethorpe, grove, knoll, park, tree and wood. -- There are also some fancy names on the city maps such as Tigertail road, Deerbrook lane, Silver Bow, Golden Bough drive, Pleasure way, Plenty street, Happy lane and Honeymoon street. -- Substitution -- Passler has a collection of names to substitute when subdivision names fail to meet specifications that they be easy to spell, to pronounce and don't sound like another one. -- The names were taken off of Pull[...] [...] aviation parts catalogs, missiles [...] fish and plants and people[...] [...] Playa Del Rey".... -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated, 16 February 1959. Streetscape. Horizontal photography.
