Hogan “Kid” Bassey was born Okon Asuquo Bassey on June 3, 1932 in Calabar, Nigeria. He was a Nigerian-British boxer and the first man of Nigerian descent to become a world boxing champion. He fought mostly as a featherweight. Bassey died on January 26, 1999. Photograph caption dated August 13, 1959 reads "Hogan 'Kid' Bassey works on the speed bag in gym drill. Bassey will attempt to regain the featherweight crown from Davey Moore Wednesday at the Olympic Auditorium."
