Shaw begins by asking for feedback from the students about the class. He goes on to discuss how to develop strategies, and the importance of aligning costs with pricing. Shaw also emphasizes alignment with customer values, and cities Electronic Data Systems (EDS) as a company wherein the process component took over, and it lost touch with its customers. He also recommends that managers should inspire knowledge workers, not control them.
