Two thatched-roof structures sit side-by-side, connected by few pieces of wood, on the Santa Anita Ranch owned by Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin in San Gabriel (now chiefly in Arcadia, California). A group of young Native American girls sit near the center opening. One girl stands with hands on hips looking toward camera. Title derived from Watkins New Series stereo #4438. Date devised by cataloger; Watkins made two trips to Southern California, in 1877 and 1880. Handwritten note on back of photo by Huntington staff identifies: "Yuma Indians. Rancho Santa Anita," though the photograph is also included in Carleton Watkins' album of the L. J. Rose property, Sunny Slope Ranch in San Gabriel, California, so the individuals could also be Gabrielino Indians (see photCL 522). A larger version of this image published as "Native Homes, San Gabriel, Cal." (see photPF 499).
