Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the interview Pam Keally was a Radio Room Dispatcher for Caltrans and she worked at Caltrans District 4 Radio Room. When the Loma Prieta Earthquake happened, she was off work shopping at the Lucky Grocery Store in Hayward, CA. She describes how products were falling off the shelves onto the floor. Once she made it home, she contacted Caltrans and met her supervisor at the San Leandro Maintenance Yard. They took a Caltrans truck to drive to San Francisco. They went over the San Mateo Bridge and Northbound 101, and Keally describes what it was like to make the journey. Once they made it to the Caltrans District 4 Radio Room, there were issues with the emergency generator not working, so there were issues with not receiving incoming calls. Eventually the problems were fixed, and in the days after the earthquake when this interview was done, Keally was working 7 days a week and having to stay away from her home in San Francisco. This recording is worth preserving because it is an eyewitness account of the Loma Prieta Earthquake and the work that had to be done to fix the earthquake damaged transportation system.
