Description
Photo is of Big Meadows, below Chester, before Lake Almanor was built. Photo was taken in very early 1900s as Lake Almanor was finished and filled in 1912. Old Prattville is on the right in the trees. Two ranches are in the distance. Isaac Mead Speegle's, then later his son Isaac Marsena Speegle's summer home and cattle range is just to the left of those ranches. The road is the old road from Chester to Prattville, Greenville and Quincy. The road left Chester by what in later years was called First Avenue. The water in the foreground was there because of some large springs and are now under the waters of the lake about where the Wilson Store has been on the west side of the Lake. The Feather River is farther back. Marsena "Marse" Speegle, sold the Speegle Ranch before the lake was formed. Leo Speegle first went to the Big Meadows Ranch in the spring of 1898 when only a few months old. Leo was born on December 25, 1897. Marse and Della spent several summers there with their cattle. In the spring when Leo was 7 and his brother Homer was 9, they helped their father drive the cattle to the Big Meadows Ranch. [Negative from Mrs. Jessie (Mrs. Leo Speegle)
