Title supplied by cataloger. Typed caption on back: "When ready for "budding," the young tree is given two incisions in the form of a cross and the bark is loosened. From the bud stock (of desired variety) is cut a shield-shaped layer of bark. (Bud stocks are taken from pedigree trees known to produce large crops of high quality fruit." Deft fingers insert this shield-shaped layer of bark bearing the bud beneath the bark of the young tree so that the bud just peeps out where the two incisions cross." Stamped on back: "This photograph is our file copy do not mutilate it. Please return as soon as possible Philadelphia Commercial Museum."
