1 image. Car in slough (Bixby Slough), 18 May 1952. Unidentified soldier from Camp Roberts, 1/2 mile east of Vermont Avenue on Pacific Coast Highway, driver fell asleep at the wheel -- uninjured but wet. (Sleeve reads: A-9561). Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. City desk. Car in slough. With only portion of its top visible ten feet offshore, this coupe is mired down in muck under the waters of treacherous Bixby Slough in San Pedro. The car plunged into slough 1/2 mile east of Vermont Avenue on Pacific Coast Highway when driver, Juan Salas, 21, soldier, Camp Roberts, fell asleep at wheel. He was wetbound (westbound?) on Pacific Coast Highway at time and car swerved across street. Next thing he knew water was pouring in through car window through which he escaped. He was dried out at the Wilmington Police Station and sent home, 630 West First Street, San Pedro."
