A crowd of men, women, and children stand before a memorial commemorating the third year since the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero during Palm Sunday celebrations at the Cathedral of San Salvador in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. The memorial before them is covered in palm fronds and colorful flowers. A large portrait of the Archbishop can be seen on the wall in the middle of the monument. The mass was held by Archbishop Arturo Rivera y Damas. Romero was shot as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel on March 24, 1980. Pope Francis canonized Romero, now Saint Óscar Romero, in 2018. The United Nations-led Truth Commission investigation concluded in 1983 that Roberto d'Aubuisson, a right wing politician that set up anti-communist death squad in El Salvador, was responsible for the murder of Romero but he was never brought to justice.
