Close-up of a historical marker commemorating Portola´'s Expedition, the first overland expedition to California. The plaque reads: Governor Gaspar de Portola and Father Crespi, commanders of the expedition in search of Monterey Bay, camped and worshipped near this spot, August 2, 1769. They were the first white men to look upon the site of the future City of Los Angeles, founded 1781. This marker was was erected by the Los Angeles Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists. The plaque shows the dates: 1769, 1930.
