Description
Microfilm of the diaries of John D.T. McAllister, kept from 1881-1906. The diaries were kept while McAllister was living in St. George and primarily chronicle his Temple work, attendance of Church conferences, local news, including births, marriages, and deaths, Church events, and daily activities. Reel one contains the diaries dated 1881-1891, reel two contains the diaries dated 1892-1902, and reel three contains the diaries dated 1903-1906, as well as assorted letters and notes dated 1857-1963. John Daniel Thompson McAllister, known as the author of the "Hand Cart Song," was born in Lewis, Delaware, on February 19, 1827. He moved to Philadelphia in 1844 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847. He moved briefly to Council Bluffs, Iowa, before traveling to Salt Lake City in 1851. McAllister was a major in the Nauvoo Legion, a member of the Deseret Dramatic Association, chief engineer of the Salt Lake City Fire Department, served as Utah Territorial Marshal, and in 1877 was made president of the St. George Stake and also served as president of the St. George Temple from 1884-1893. He died in St. George, Utah, on January 21, 1910.
