Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
During the 1920s and 1930s, Tommy Hitchcock dominated the demanding, fast-paced sport of polo. He played on four national champion teams and on the U.S. Olympic team. (It's also been said that he served as the model for Tom Buchanan in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby.") When Hitchcock came west to challenge the best California teams, Hollywood stars came out in droves to watch "Ten Goal Tommy." Hitchcock died in World War II. Photo dated: January 31, 1929.
