Description
Shovels inscribed with "La Brea Dig, 1969" are used for opening ceremonies of a new dig at the tar pits. Photo caption reads: "Chris Shaw, Lakewood High School, Lakewood, digs a shovelfull of tar at La Brea tar pits today as ceremonies kicked off the new scientific excavation to be conducted there. At left is Sherry Metzler, Idaho State University grad student in archaeology. In background is Dr. Herbert Friedmann, director of the Los Angeles County Museum". Photo dated: June 13, 1969.
