Photograph was edited for publication purposes. On May 6, 1961, 44 year-old Los Angeles Police officer Sidney Riegel was shot and killed by 31 year-old robbery suspect Thomas (Kiko) Arroyo Estrada, also known as Thomas Leiva. Riegel's partner, Ronald Traurig was wounded in the shootout that occurred at the San Fernando Garden Apartments, 12923 Pierce Street, in Pacoima. After an intense week-long manhunt, Estrada turned himself in to police and confessed. He was sentenced to life in prison. Photograph caption dated April 20, 1962 reads "Dodger Norm Sherry and Sgt. Cohen set plans." The article partially reads "A Van Nuys policeman who was fatally shot while rescuing a fellow officer from robbers' bullets last May will be honored April 30 at Sid Riegel Memorial Night in the Dodger Stadium."
