This is a photograph of the "dedication of the Star of the Sea Church at Dalian. At the altar is Fr. Lane [center], Fr. Tibesar [kneeling], Fr. Reme Verhaeghe [right of Fr. Lane] and Fr. Pa'm at the left of Fr. Lane." The church is filled with the men on one side and the women at the other side. The women are wearing white veils. There are three Sisters in the left front row. Born in Massachusetts, Bishop Lane came to Maryknoll in 1913 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1920. In 1923 he went to Hong Kong to become the procurator of that mission. Two years later he went north and inaugurated the Fushun mission in Manchuria. In 1932 Monsignor Lane was appointed Prefect Apostolic and in 1940 Vicar Apostolic. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1940. After Pearl Harbor, Bishop Lane was interned by the Japanese in Fushun. Within a year of prepatriation, Bishop Lane was elected to be the third Superior General of Maryknoll. His tenure led to the greatest expansion at home and abroad for Maryknoll. -- Born in Illinois, Fr. Tibesar came to Maryknoll in 1919 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1921. In 1926 he was assigned to Fushun where he became the first assistant to the Society Superior. He worked with the Japanese in the Los Angeles mission from 1933-1934. He went to Japan in 1946 and in 1949 he was appointed by the Apostolic Delegate to the post of Executive Secretary to the National Catholic Committee of Japan. In 1968 on behalf of Emperor Hirohito and the Japanese Government, Fr. Tibesar was decorated with a special honor for his role on behalf of Japanese internees during World War II and for his work among the Japanese people.
