Description
This 1939 postcard shows one of Captain John Sutter's offices, this one connected with his bedroom and kitchen, along the fort's western wall. Many believe this to be the very location where James W. Marshall, on the evening of January 28, 1848, revealed to Sutter, the gold he had found at the Coloma sawmill, just days earlier The room also contained a brief and rudimentary library consisting of books on chemistry, military science, and medicine. It also contained a bible and one of Sutter's most prized possessions: a first edition set of the Encyclopedia America.
