Photograph was edited for publication purposes Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004.; George Lloyd Murphy was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1902. He was an American actor, singer, dancer and politician. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1944-1946, and was also a vice-president at Desilu Studios and at the Technicolor Corporation. Murphy served as a United States Senator from 1965-1971. He died in 1992. Photograph caption dated October 6, 1964 reads "Sen. Pierre Salinger, left, and his GOP rival George Murphy banter stories before their state-wide televised debate last night. Both candidates were confident they had gained ground in their battle for election in November." The debate took place at the CBS Television Studios in Los Angeles.
