Description
This circa-1960 photograph shows notable storefronts on the south side of J Street, between 10th and 11th streets. From left to right are Country Maid Creamery Restaurant, Sherwin-Williams Paints and the Sacramento Sewing Machine and Vacuum Cleaner Company. On the level above Country Maid is KCRA Radio. Country Maid was known for its fine fountain items and pastries, but ran into trouble in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when it underwent four straight years of picketing due to what were perceived to be subpar wages. The longest tenured of the tenants was the Sacramento Sewing Machine and Vacuum Cleaner Company, operating from 1945 to 2002. It was owned by Hank Paschane, a native Californian, track and field star at McClatchy High School, and veteran of the Pacific Theater during World War II.
