Description
1989-1187. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 3. View of a corner 3 storey building; the stucco building in front has a double door that takes up most of the width of the facade; above doorway is a large window spanning floors 2 and three which bows out from the building; above this window is a stuccoed heraldic device (?); at four corners of building are four towers that rise above the roof line; on left a man stands to side of the large building and behind him is a parked car and a row of buildings; to the right of the principle building are shorter buildings, the first of which has an awning that says "LAUNDRY" on it; in front of the store with the awning stands a single lamp post and a car parked in front. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Organized. Aug. 1853. Bldg. first erected in 1853. Destroyed by fire July 13th, 1854, rebuilt early in 1855. Size 20 x 40, Cost $6000.5th. Bet. J & K st... (on Oak ave) Abandoned in 1934..."
