Description
A Maasai woman sews a piece of fabric in the presence of two children. The woman sits on the branches of a fallen tree. Traditionally, Maasai people sourced their clothing from animal skins and other natural materials. They have now adopted more popular fabrics to construct clothing. The villagers are often attired in one-piece sarong wrapped around the body. In 1979, Richard Cross was invited to photograph the Maasai people as part of an ethnographic film project by then doctoral student Peter Biella. Cross received the invitation while doing graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in Tanzania, Cross photographed the cultural traditions, tribal rituals and daily life of the Maasai people.
