Description
Resting in splendor at the southwest corner of Twelfth and K Streets in this November 19, 1940, photograph is the Weinstock, Lubin and Company department store. It was built in 1924 for 1,250,000 dollars and opened on June 2 to tremendous fanfare. It was modeled after the prominent Paris department store, Printemps, while the Cahill Brothers of San Francisco were responsible for construction. With its stately marble and terra cotta finish, the four story structure was a vision of convenience with its four elevators, drinking fountains, child’s playroom, barber shop, and hair dressing salon. Another trademark feature of Weinstock’s was its display windows, running 240 feet down K Street and 180 down Twelfth and beguiling passersby with artisan grade merchandising techniques. The store was sold in 1995 to Federated Department Stores, Incorporated, effectively ending a 121-year love affair between Weinstock’s and the Capital City.
