Description
Signage text: Here is the northern gate of the city of Polonnaruva enclosed by high ramparts. The chambers on either side of the gate must be guard rooms (the small signboard at right identifies the location as one for a "gate house") and nearby are small Hindu shrines. Either side of the main street running across the main gate is fortified with walls and the adjacent small rooms may be trade stalls. There is evidence that there had been a properly laid out, intricate drainage system on either side of the street.
