Description
Photograph of a painting dated 1785 depicting Friar Junipero Serra during his last communion at the city of Mexico, [s.d.]. The friar stands at center dressed in his communion robes holding a communion wafer in his right hand and the wine chalice in this left. Other priests are knelt to either side by his feet on a decorated rug. Two men who appear to be in military uniforms stand to the left, one of them holding a candle. The altar stone is visible in the background beneath a statue of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus. Text can be seen on the bottom of the image, written in Spanish. A line of text in the image itself near Serra reads in Latin: "Tantum ergo Sacramentum". Compare to CHS-331 and CHS-337. These photographs depict portraits of Serra, along with a dagguereotype.
