Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s.
William Dudley Pelley was a well-known novelist and screenwriter in the late 1920s, but he went on to gain more notoriety as an outspoken fascist, Nazi-sympathizer, and founder of the Silver Legion of America (or the Silver Shirts). This poster is typical of the WANTED posters of the day, featuring a photo of the criminal being sought, in this case, Pelley. The poster provides a detailed description of Pelley, down to his Van Dyke beard, and indicates that a bench warrant has been issued "by the Judge of the Superior Court of Buncombe County ... for sentence on conviction of felony, making fraudulent representation, and also for violating the terms of a suspended sentence on another charge by failing to remain of good behavior, and by engaging in, among other things, UN-AMERICAN activities." 9 x 6 in.
