Photograph caption dated August 12, 1987 reads, "A huge crane lifts one of the piggyback container that spilled from flatcars when a mile-long freight was derailed near a Santa Ana Freeway underpass in Commerce. "An unknown person, not an employee, threw the switch as the train went by, causing the derailment," Southern Pacific spokesman John Tierney said. Twenty cars, double-stacked with the containers, left the rails, causing almost $200,000 in damage. Workers expected to complete replacement of about 400 feet of track near Slauson Avenue and Telegraph Road by midnight last night. Pulled by eight locomotives, the train was bound for Long Beach from Colton." Signs (right) for the neighboring Denny's and Ramada Inn and a billboard for Captain Morgan original spiced rum are visible above the crane.
