Description
The preparation room of the Libby, McNeill and Libby cannery is shown prominently in this 1935 photograph, taken from the corner of Thirty-First Street and Stockton Boulevard. As of March 1929, Sacramento’s four canneries were employing over 5,000 people and boasted a payroll total of $3,000,000. At the time of the photograph, Sacramento and the nation were well into the Great Depression. Libby, McNeill and Libby was not immune to the tumult while, in April 1931, the company’s gross earnings dropped by nearly one-half. Nonetheless, it was Libby, McNeill and Libby that gained region-wide distinction for giving away surplus fruits and vegetables to Depression Era victims during 1935. The cannery closed in November 1979, when management claimed that the factory was outdated and too expensive to maintain.
