(L-R) An unidentified assistant stands in the middle of a grass lawn and teaches first aid techniques to survival schoool students, Jack Madeley, Marilyn Chandler, Joel Turner, Ron Venn, and Allen Mons. Rifles rest against a tree trunk in the background as the students sit on a bench and ground. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
