Description
Photograph of a view of a lettuce field on the farm of Charles Freeman, near Holtville, ca.1947. Many rows of lettice extend from the foreground to the horizon line in the distance. At center, a man sits in a tractor with high-traction tires, pulling a cart of harvested lettuce. A similar tractor sits to his right, further in the distance. A cart, without a tractor, is being filled by a group of workers in the distant left centerground, while four more workers harvest lettuce in the center rows. More workers and equipment are visible in the far distance. A row of trees lines the left rear edge of the field, and the forms of hills can be seen in the background. The lower right corner of the image is marked "54554".
Photoprint reads: "Received from Don Chandler, taken January 1947. Owner Charles Freedman. Description of work: Harvesting lettuce from muddy fields in California. An Unusually heavy rain in the Imperial Valley could have meant a big loss on perishable crops but dependable tract-type traction of 'Caterpillar' diesel tractors helped save the lettuce crop of Charles Freedman who farms 2700 acres (mostly row crops). Picture was taken near Holtville, California. Mexican nationals picked and loaded the crop."
