Description
“Rajah of Chamba 1863.” Portrait of Raja, probably Sri Singh (1839-1870), seated in fine clothing. The Chamba mission was established, in 1863, by William Ferguson (1821-1904) as an independent venture. Chamba was an independent princely state and came under British influence in 1848. When Rev. Ferguson and his companions arrived in Chamba, they were welcomed warmly by the Raja, who gave them food and a place to live. The Raja later gave land on which a church was built. Chamba now forms part of Himachal Pradesh, India.
