During World War II, Albert Aschenbrenner (1913-2002) served in the U.S. Army in Europe. He attained the rank of captain and earned two Bronze Stars. He joined the Cal Poly faculty as an English professor in 1947, when the campus was still in San Dimas and considered a branch of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He served in various posts up to a dean of arts and sciences at Cal Poly Pomona. He described the San Dimas campus as being tucked away in the orange groves.
