Hermann Simon is Chairman of Simon-Kucher & Partners, an international consulting company. In this interview Simon discusses his relationship with Peter Drucker and what he has learned from his teachings. He maintains that the most important thing he learned from Drucker was that, “the most fundamental management truths, don’t change much over time.” He relates management to philosophy and explains how Drucker’s early academic learning was grounded in philosophy, art and history. Simon explains how Drucker’s broad German education led him to view management as a liberal art. He refers to Drucker as a “master in fundamental thinking.” Simon argues that Drucker’s major contributions have been his ideas on population dynamics, management of objectives, corporate governance, contrasting views on human resources, and his recognition of other big trends in the world of management. Simon relates how Drucker saw himself as a historical writer rather than a business researcher in a narrow sense. He ends the interview by comparing Drucker’s power of association to the Argentinean writer, Jose Luis Borges.
