Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated January 20, 1965 reads, "Shoe on table rolled from 12-inch hopper hatch, above, after Harold Somerhalder, Burbank Asphalt worker, was buried alive in 100 tons of sand." The article partially reads, "Harold Somerhalder, 235 S. Frederick St., was dead when rescue workers finally reached him about 7 p.m. at the Burbank Municipal Asphalt plant, 3130 N. Claybourn St...Raymond Lere, a fellow employe [sic] at the plant, spotted Somerhalder's foot protruding from an eight-inch hatch at the bottom of the hopper below the sand pile. Police said Somerhalder apparently stepped into a soft area and immediately sank into 20 feet of fresh sand."
