Description
Biography/History: Donald Wilson is a retired chef and former chief shop steward who worked at the Century Plaza Hotel for many years. Concerned about the decline of African American representation in the hospitality industry over the past three decades, he has been active in working to bring more African Americans into the industry through UNITE HERE Local 11’s diversity program and the Hospitality Training Academy. Currently, Donald serves on the executive board of Local 11.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Career and experience as a rank-and-file leader in Local 11 and as a community leader — Becoming a shop steward in the late 1980s — Organizing hotel workers at the New Otani and along Century Boulevard — Fighting for a living wage for hotel workers in Long Beach and Los Angeles — Decline of African American workers in the hotel industry and work as a diversity organizer with the UNITE HERE International — Organizing during the 1992 Los Angeles rebellion — Role as a pastor and his efforts to bring faith, community, and the union together — Influence of the Reverends Martin Luther King Jr. and James Lawson Jr. on his personal and political development.
