Photograph caption dated November 10, 1962 reads, "A mock re-enactment of a rescue operation in the Sylmar foothills is demonstrated by Explorer Post 369 who specialize in emergency preparation and civilian life rescue work. Scoutmaster Ted Neville, in this instance, is the victim, as Explorers Bill Center, David Neville, Blair Dody, Bruce Knapp, Mike Lloyd, Jim Greene and Jamie Brown work to bring him up safely from bottom of canyon cliff. In the first scene, Neville has been given immediate First Aid treatment and sling and ropes have been placed around the victim in such a manner as to bring him safely up the cliff. Knowledge of First Aid and rope work as well as proper mountain climbing techniques are stressed in this rescue operation. In the second scene, he is slowly brought to safety with the aid of the Explorers. Besides this type of rescue operations, the Explorers are taught survival, intelligence and reconnaissance, and to be alert and prepared at all times for any kind of civilian emergency in which they may be called on to assist. Their most recent 'disaster call' was in the Newhall fire."; See images #00120768 through #00120770 for all photos in this series.
