Description
Photograph of Mission San Gabriel, showing the bell tower, 1900. The structure stands about two-stories tall and approximately three feet deep. A thick buttress supports the adjacent church wall. Also called a "Campanario", this belfry has four bells (one large, three mid-size) each hung in its own arched opening. There are a total of six arched openings but only four of them hold bells. Behind the rightmost arch, a ladder can be seen. At the highest point of the belfry stands a cross. The stucco on parts of the belfry and the adjacent building have worn off. The belfry stands behind a low adobe wall. In the foreground, in front of the belfry is a palm. The bells have raised lettering on their outer shell. The upper right bell reads "San ...". Caption reads: "'The Bells' San Gabriel Mission".
