Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes
Travel Town, an outdoor museum in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, was dedicated in 1952. The Southern Pacific Company, was willing to donate an obsolete locomotive to be the first train on exhibit. The Los Angeles City Recreation and Park Department's museum is visited each week by hundreds of youngsters and adults who are interested in the development of transportation. The focus of the museum is rail transportation, but other items are on display.
Photograph caption dated April 28, 1954 reads "Unlike the age of steam locomotives and stagecoaches, the air age is familiar to youngsters, but exhibits such as this Curtis (sic) P-40 which saw service with 'Flying Tigers' still are popular. Shot up and deteriorated by weather, plane is slated for complete rehabilitation to preserve it as exhibit of World War II aircraft. On view with it is Japanese 'Jack' plane, advanced version of famed 'Zero.' Due to fragile condition of both planes, they are fenced off--only exhibits which cannot be touched."; See images #00121174 through #00121182 for all photos in this series.
