Description
Shown is a circa 1905 advertisement for the Elk Grove Winery, located one-quarter mile south of downtown Elk Grove. Founded by the Portuguese-born J.L. DaRosa in the 1890s, the winery lasted until the mid-1940s. "Old Sherry, Angelica and Port a Specialty" reads this advertisement for the winery John Nevis operated in Elk Grove during the 19th century. Long-time employee Jose L Da Roza, who came from the Portugese Azores island of St. George, gradually purchased the business. By the time his third child, Edward L. Da Roza, assumed control of the enterprise in 1909 the 180 acre ranch included a vineyard with the capacity to grow enough grapes to make one million gallons of wine annually.
