View of Montgomery Street looking south from southwest corner of Sacramento. Large banks and offices line both sides of street. Many pedestrians on sidewalk, numerous carriages pulled up at curbs. Single-track Omnibus Railroad Co. horsecar line down middle of street.
Text under photo: "Montgomery Street looking south, 1880. Building with steeple Duncan's Bank-failed causing a panic. [Appropriate building marked with "x" on photo.] Selby's Assayer Office. The earliest and largest firm in the business in California. Many up-country miners and business men placed more confidence in this firm than they would in the United States Mint."
