Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004.
Photograph caption dated May 29, 1964 reads "Mary Oreck, left, and Peggy Maddocks, Valley campaign manager of Pierre Salinger for U.S. Senate, look over 1 million pieces of mail which workers will carry door-to-door to every registered Democrat. Campaign ran out of money for postage. Valley is a key area." Salinger was campaigning for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. He was running against Alan Cranston.
