Description
Originally known as the Hebrew Sheltering Home for the Aged, the Jewish Home for the Aging was founded in Boyle Heights in 1912. About four years later, the Home's first permanent facility was built on Boyle Avenue, where it existed for decades. In 1967, acreage in Reseda was purchased and a facility was built on Victory Boulevard. A merger in 1979 with the Menorah Village created a second campus on Tampa Avenue in Reseda.
Photograph article dated September 15, 1962 partially reads, "Life can be beautiful - even after 73 winters. Two senior citizens at the California Home for the Aegd [sic], 19200 Sherman Way, Reseda, can attest to it. With the beatific and slightly apprehensive expression of all those about to embark on the sea of matrimony, Fannie Hutoron and Leon Bluestein explain how it happened. 'We took a walk and stopped under a tree - he wanted to ask me, but he didn't have a chance,' says the bride shyly. 'We just fell into each other's arms,' adds the bridegroom. The wedding announcement came after a five-month whirlwind courtship at the Home of the Aged, where both have been staying. At a special reception for the press, half a dozen of the bride's friends enjoyed coffee while flashbulbs blinked and movie cameras whirred." Photograph caption reads, "Bride-to-be straightens fiance's tie - 72-year-old to wed Sunday."
