Photograph shows Flood control barrier---Forming a gigantic concrete barrier across the San Joaquin River, Friant Dam stands ready to stem any peak flood flows originating upstream. This imposing view shows the upstream face of the dam being built by the United States Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Central Valley Project. The river flows through permanent outlet conduits in the base of the dam. Water is about 70 feet deep at this point.
