Photograph was edited for publication purposes The fires at Lake Sherwood were preceded by fires in the Malibu area that broke out December 26, 1956 and raged throughout the Santa Monica Mountains from Paradise Cove and Escondido Canyon all the way to the Mulholland Highway near Seminole Hot Springs and Malibu Lake. Just days apart, two more fires were started in the Las Flores Canyon area, to the east, and Lake Sherwood, to the west. Photograph caption dated December 29, 1956 reads, "Unidentified fire captain starts pump on south end of Lake Sherwood which served as main water source for some 15 pieces of fire equipment. Before fire, this dock served as launching point for small fire boat which ironically stood idle as blaze whipped around half of lake. Pumpers from Oxnard and as far away as Santa Barbara responded after call for help was sounded."; See images #00114899 and #00114934 through #00114936 for all photos in this series.
