Description
Microfilm of the diaries of Joseph H. Richards, covering the years 1876, 1881, 1886, and 1892-1893. All of the Utah and Arizona diaries consist of brief entries recalling Richards's daily life. The 1876 volume records his life in Utah and his call to colonize Arizona the 1881 volume records his life in the St. Joseph United Order the 1886 diary recalls his travels from Arizona to Utah and California and the 1892-1893 diary recounts in more detail his mission to England and Scotland, and also includes a brief autobiography. Joseph Hill Richards (1841-1924) was born in Toronto. His family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved to Nauvoo in 1842. After a stay at Winter Quarters they traveled to Utah in 1851 and settled at Mill Creek. In 1859 the family helped colonize Cache Valley, and Joseph was called on a mission to Apache County, Arizona, in 1876. He helped establish the St. Joseph Ward, where Richards served as bishop from 1878 to 1887. He was also a captain in the Arizona militia, postmaster of St. Joseph, and county treasurer and commissioner. He served on a mission to England and Scotland from 1891-1893. He died in Joseph City, Arizona, in 1924.
