Caption from November 14, 1965 Sacramento Bee reads "This stretch of State Route 88 west of the Silver Lake downgrade was completed a year ago with a few repairs made last summer. Proponents of all-year opening say it is the shortest route between Stockton and the Lake Tahoe area."
